Derek Slack Motors - Known for Great Runners!

Last Sunday, #TeamTeeside along with runners from Derek Slack Motors, completed the 39th running of the world’s biggest half marathon, the Simplyhealth Great North Run.

Derek Slack Motors are proud sponsors of Teeside Hospice and collectively our team raised almost £2,000 for their chosen charities.

Pictured L to R are: Peter Roxby - Parts Manager, Our service manager Chris’s wife Denise Harrison, Paula Slack (who was running to raise money for Multiple Sclerosis), Tony Slack - Managing Director and Andrew Fowle - Sales Manager (who ran in aid of the Stroke Association).

After the race Tony took to the massage table to have his aches and pains soothed away (His feet took the brunt of the damage as seen in a photo which is too horrific to be shown here!). Andrew managed to get a ‘selfie’ with Radzi from Blue Peter.

Peter was an official pace runner, carrying a ‘2hr 35mins’ flag to help runners pace themselves towards their target time for the half marathon. He finished the run within 35 seconds of his target!

The first Great North Run was staged on 28 June 1981, when 12,000 runners participated. By 2011, the number of participants had risen to 54,000. For the first year it was advertised as a local fun run; nearly thirty years on it has become one of the biggest running events in the world, and the biggest in the UK. Only the Great Manchester Run and London Marathon come close to attracting similar numbers of athletes each year.

Flying Falcons Fantastic Final

The National Final of the Jaguar Primary School Challenge took place on Tuesday 11th June 2019 at the British Motor Museum in Warwick.

Unfortunately, ‘The Flying Falcons’ - the Derek Slack Motors sponsored team of students, didn’t walk away with the trophy. However, we received a lovely letter from Miss Brown - the children’s Curriculum Lead.

Good Morning,

I am writing to inform you that our year 6 team ‘The Flying Falcons’ had a fantastic time on Tuesday at the Jaguar Primary School Challenge competition. It was a very exciting day with a total of 38 teams competing nationally. Thanks to your generous support, we were nominated for the sponsorship award, however we sadly lost out to another team. The children had the most amazing time and have learned a lot from the experience and it has certainly sparked a greater interest in engineering and design.

I would like to extend my gratitude once more for your generous sponsorship and supporting our team to reach the national final. Photographs are being currently being gathered and will be emailed to you promptly for you to use in any marketing or media materials.

Best wishes,

Miss Amy Brown (and The Flying Falcons)

We wish all the members of the team good luck in whichever career path they choose, whether it's car design or not!

Young Engineers in the Final

The National Final of the Jaguar Primary School Challenge is being held today, Tuesday 11th June 2019 at the British Motor Museum in Warwick

Derek Slack Motors are proud to be sponsoring ‘The Flying Falcons’ team of students from a North East School who have managed to reach the final.

The students will researched, designed and created model racing cars, learning about aerodynamic forces, efficiency, mathematics and the principles of design. Teams were also given the chance to experiment with the electrification of their vehicles, considering the design considerations of using alternative energy sources.

Look out for updates on how they faired. Good luck kids!

Great North Run 2019 - Sunday 8th September

Derek Slack Motors are proud to sponsor Teesside Hospice and #TeamTeesside at the Great North Run.

#TeamTeesside sponsored by Derek Slack Motors will take on the world's greatest half marathon in support of Teesside Hospice this September

#TeamTeesside are participating in the Great North Run on Sunday 8th September 2019 to raise funds to help support people living with cancer and life limiting illnesses. All of the runners have been set a fundraising target of £300 with every penny raised going directly towards helping patients at Teesside Hospice.

Teesside Hospice is a local hospice which offers palliative care for people who are living with a life-limiting illness when a cure is no longer possible. Their care is provided 24 hours per day, 7 days a week, 365 days per year and reaches over 3,000 local people every year.

Teesside Hospital

Each year Derek Slack Motors pledge their support to a local charity helping to raise awareness and support with fund-raising events. In 2016, we were delighted to support the Trinity Holistic Centre. This year, we decided to embrace the power of social media requesting friends to nominate a charity of their choice for 2017. Derek Slack Motors are now delighted to announce their support in 2017 for Teesside Hospice.

Teesside Hospice, established in 1982 helps over 3000 people each year in the Teesside area. The hospice exists to enhance the quality of life for those suffering from cancer and other life limiting illnesses such as advanced cancer, Motor Neurone Disease, Multiple Sclerosis and Heart Disease. Teesside Hospice works closely with local Acute Hospital Trusts, Community Healthcare Providers, Macmillan Nurses, Community Nursing Teams and General Practitioners to take specialist palliative care services and expertise to patients, families and carers.

Managing Director, Tony Slack said, “Most people are surprised to learn Teesside Hospice’s annual running costs are in excess of £2.7 million. It’s only with the generous support from corporate sponsors, donors and supporters that this vital resource is able to continue to care for those suffering from life limiting illness in the Teesside region.

The Trinity Holistic Centre

Derek Slack Motors, proud to support the Trinity Holistic Centre, South Tees Hospitals Charity in 2016.

The Trinity Holistic Centre provided support to over 2,500 people affected by cancer last year and the number of people accessing the service is increasing.

The centre wants to offer all families affected by cancer and long term conditions across Teesside, North Yorkshire and County Durham; the opportunity to access emotional, practical and wellbeing support to help cope through diagnosis, treatment, living with and beyond their diagnosis and for some, support at the end of life.

The centre (including its services from the Friarage Hospital, Northallerton) costs almost £300,000 a year to run. The more money raised, the more people they can support.

Donations from Derek Slack Motors’ ‘courtesy car box’ provided valuable support for this vital charity in 2016. Tony Slack- Managing Director said, “The regional centre offers a unique service for people affected by cancer and other life-changing conditions. This is only made possible by the generosity of fundraisers and supporters. For example £35 can provide one hour of counselling for an adult or child affected by a cancer diagnosis.”

Nunthorpe Woman Becomes Lucky Owner of a Brand New Skoda

Derek Slack Motors, proud supporters of the South Cleveland Heart Fund, recently took their seats during the evening of the Loving Hearts Raffle and Gala Dinner at the Thistle Hotel, Middlesbrough, where one lucky Nunthorpe woman’s raffle tickets were pulled out of the bag, to become the lucky owner of a brand new SKODA. Pat Bingham - mum-of-three and grandmother of four said, she thought nothing more following buying tickets for the Loving Hearts Raffle - a prize draw organised by Middlesbrough Erimus Rotary Club in aid of the South Cleveland Heart Fund (SCHF). However, the 75-year-old went on to win one of the biggest prizes of the night, a Skoda Citigo from Derek Slack Motors in Middlesbrough. Pat received a telephone call at home to tell her the good news and she soon made her way to the event. “I knew of the heart fund”, said Pat. “The ladies club I’m involved with, Zetland Ladies, has supported the charity’s fundraising appeal. So when I saw the tickets for sale I thought why not. I never expected to win though- I’m so thrilled - you never think it is going to be you!” A total of £80,000 was raised through the efforts of Middlesbrough Erimus Rotary Club. The money will go toward to SCHF’s £1m fundraising campaign to upgrade an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scanner and replace another at the hospital. Mike Overy, from the club and chairman of the Loving Hearts Raffle committee, said: “We are delighted that the combined effort of all the rotary clubs in the area have produced such a great return for the MRI appeal.” Dr Adrian Davies, chairman of the South Cleveland Heart Fund (SCHF), added: “A huge vote of thanks to the Rotary Clubs of the heart unit catchment population, led by Middlesbrough Erimus, in making the Loving Hearts fantastic prize draw an amazing success.”
